BBNA Scholarship Opportunities
BBNA Chapter Scholarship
This scholarship is provided by BBNA for unlicensed nursing students pursuing an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing. This scholarship is $2,500. Two BBNA Chapter Scholarships are available.
BBNA Presidents’ Leadership Scholarship
The scholarship is provided by the current and past presidents of BBNA to support a graduate student in the development of leadership skills in nursing.
The scholarship amount is $2,000.
BBNA Lifetime Members’ Community Service Scholarship
The scholarship is provided by the members of BBNA to support a pre-licensure student or a nurse pursuing an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of evidence of ongoing and sustained community service activities.
The scholarship amount is $2,000.
Dr. Delois Hughes Skipwith Guy Scholarship
Delois Hughes Skipwith Guy, DSN, is Professor Emeritus at the University of Alabama School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Delois Hughes Skipwith Guy Scholarship was initiated by retired nursing professor, Dr. Gretchen McDaniel. Dr. McDaniel was an undergraduate and graduate student of Dr. Guy at the University of Alabama School of Nursing. This scholarship is to honor Dr. Guy who continues to be a role model for nursing students and nurses as well as an advocate for the health and well-being of older adults. Funding of this scholarship will be continued by Dr. Guy's family and friends. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate nursing student who is pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in psychiatric-mental health and/or gerontological nursing.
The scholarship amount is $2,500.
Dawson Family Leader Scholarship
This scholarship is provided by Dr. Martha Dawson, president of the National Black Nurses Association and Lifetime Member of BBNA, for a student in a master’s or DNP program with a concentration in nursing administration. The successful applicant has aspirations to become a nursing director and/or chief nursing officer.
The scholarship amount is $1,000.
Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies Scholarship Assistance Award
This award is provided by Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB), a 501(c) (3) organization that supports women/men of color who are either breast cancer survivors or have been directly affected by the disease. The organization also educates and facilitates activities and programs to empower its target audience. Ms. Brenda J. Phillips Hong is the founding executive director of BBBB. The award is for an undergraduate or graduate nursing student pursuing a degree who demonstrates an interest in breast cancer education. The award recipient must participate in a minimum of one breast cancer awareness community forum sponsored by Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies.
The award amount is $500.
Amerson-Cox Family Leadership or Education Award
This award is provided by Dr. Gladys Cox Amerson, Dr. Beverly Cox Sims, and Dr. Jimel Amerson Gibbs in loving memories of their parents/grandparents, Marshall and Annie Mae Cox. This scholarship is for a nursing student in a graduate program with a concentration in nursing education, nurse practitioner, or nursing administration. The successful applicant is pursuing educational preparation to become either a nursing educator, nurse practitioner, and/or chief nursing officer.
The award amount is $500.00.
BBNA Under 40 Scholarship
This scholarship is sponsored by the Fairfield High School Alumni Association for a graduate nursing student pursuing a master's or doctoral degree in nursing. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is under the age of 40 at the time of the application deadline.
The scholarship amount is $2,000.
The Emmanuel Washington Memorial Award
The award is sponsored by Mrs. Carolyn Washington in honor of her husband to commemorate the legacy and impact that her husband had on the lives of others. The award is for an unlicensed nursing student pursing an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing.
The award amount is $500.
Kimberly Froelich Nursing Excellence Award
This award, provided by the Birmingham VA Medical Center Nursing Leadership, honors Dr. Froelich, a former Chief Nurse of Outpatient/Staff Development who passed away on January 8, 2021. Dr. Froelich began her career at the Atlanta VA Hospital and served in various roles at several VA Medical Centers. She was also a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The award is for a prelicensure nursing student pursuing an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing.
The award amount is $500.
