October is here, which means it’s officially
Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

October is a special month that is dedicated to raising awareness about the disease. We’d like to take this moment to share some quick facts:

The State of Breast Cancer in the United States

  • Every 2 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with a case of breast cancer.
  • Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed.
  • Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death for women 40-59, and is 2nd only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among all women
  • Since 1982,Komen has funded more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit. $790 million in breast cancer research since 1982.
  • There are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.
Take charge of your health and make an appointment to receive a mammogram and/or clinical breast exam.To truly eradicate breast cancer, we must not only invest in research for a cure for future generations, but we must also help meet the immediate breast health needs of women and their families facing the disease today. In addition to raising funds for breast health programs for underserved women in our 38 counties, the North Central Alabama Affiliate also operates an extensive Education and Outreach program to educate and raise awareness among all families that EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES.When the disease is confined to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is over 98%.Reference: Komen News October 1, 2013
